Artist, teacher. Born in the village of White Church in Kiev Province in the family of Mark Cherkassky (8 July 1886). Graduated from the Kiev School of Art (1909). Studied under Nikolai Dubovskoi and Vasily Savinsky at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St Petersburg (1909–17). Taught at the Kiev Institute of Art (1935–37). Arrested (15 February 1937). Sentenced by a special board to ten years imprisonment (February 1938). Released (19 August 1940). Moved to Almaty (1941). Taught at the Almaty School of Art (until 1958). Honoured Artist of Kazakhstan (1956), People’s Artist of Kazakhstan (1963). Died in Almaty (29 November 1967).
