Painter, graphic artist, teacher. Born in the family of a worker called Sergei Ugarov in Petrograd (1922). Studied under Arkady Rylov and Mikhail Platunov at the art studio in the House of Scholars, at Wilhelm Alfred Eberling’s private studio (1930–41) and under Victor Oreshnikov and Andrei Mylnikov at the Ilya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1945–51). Post-graduate student of Alexander Gerasimov at the creative studio of the Ilya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1951–54). Taught at the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1952–83, rector 1977–78). President of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1983). Died in Leningrad (1991). Contributed to exhibitions (from 1951). People’s Artist of the USSR, winner of the Ilya Repin Prize.
