The Preobrazhensky Regiment was formed from the forces awarded as playmates to Peter the Great at the age of five in the village of Preobrazhenskoe near Moscow (1687). Later renamed the Preobrazhensky Life Guards (1700), the regiment took part in all the palace coups in Russia in the eighteenth century. The Preobrazhensky regimental barracks were designed by Vladislav Lvov at 33 Millionnaya Street (1853–57).
