Arkhip Kuinji painted more than five hundred works, mostly small studies and sketches. This particular example was painted on the edge of the Black Sea, near the small town of Kikeneiz on the southern shore of the Crimean peninsula.
Kuinji bought a large plot of land there running down to the sea, where he built a house, studio and library for his students. The artist loved working in the Crimea, painting the clouds, water and sandy shorelines in various weather conditions.
