Courtier, statesman. Grandson of Fieldmarshal Mikhail Kutuzov, father of Count Ivan Ivanovich Tolstoy. Born (1806) in the family of Matvei Tolstoy (1772–1815) and Praskovia Golenischeva-Kutuzova (1777–1844). Married Elizaveta Tulinova. Stallmeister of the future Tsar Alexander II (from 1839). Grand marshal (1860), member of the State Council (1861), senator, minister of post and telegraph. Count (1866). Died and buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery in St Petersburg (1867).
