Swiss engraver, painter. Son of a coachman, father of Matthias Gabriel Lory. Studied under Johann Ludwig Aberli and Caspar Wolf. Visited Geneva and St Gallen. Returned to Berne, where he coloured the works of other artists and engraved his own views of Switzerland (from late 1790s). Engraved views of Moscow and St Petersburg after originals by Benjamin Patersson and Johann Georg Mayr for the publisher Johann Walser (1797–1805). Illustrated descriptions of journeys with coloured etchings and aquatints. Collaborated with his son on Voyage pittoresque de Genève à Milan par le Simplon published by Pierre Didot l’aîné in Paris (1811).
