Painter. Retired guards staff captain. Studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts (late 1840s–1853). Awarded a minor silver medal (1850), major silver medal (1851), minor gold medal (1852) and a major gold medal and the title of class artist (1853). Foreign fellow of the Imperial Academy of Arts in Paris (1855–58). Painted battle pictures and genre scenes from the lives of the peasantry, developing the line begun by Alexei Venetsianov.
