Woldemar Hau

Died: 1895, St Petersburg

Painter, draughtsman. Son of the artist Johannes Hau (1771–1838) and half-brother of the artist Eduard Hau (1807–1888). Studied under Carl von Kügelgen in Reval (1827–32) and under Alexander Gottlob Sauerweid at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1832–36). Awarded a major silver medal and the title of non-class artist (1836). Lived and worked in Italy and Germany (1838–40). Court portraitist of Tsar Nicholas I (from 1840). Academician of watercolour painting (1849).
