Painter, sculptor. Born in Zheludok in Lithuania (1890). Studied at Vilna School of Art (1909–12), where he met Chaïm Soutine and Michel Kikoïne. Lived in Paris (from 1912), working in sculpture. Began taking a more serious interest in painting under the influence of Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh and Chaïm Soutine. Painted landscapes, portraits and still-lifes. Gained recognition (1916–17). Worked on contract with art dealers and galleries (from 1923). Founding member of Udar (1923). Died in Serres (1981). Contributed to exhibitions (from 1914). Contributed to the Salon d’Automne (from 1921), Salon des Indépendants (from 1914), Salon des Tuileries (from 1924), joint exhibitions with Chaïm Soutine and Lazar Volovick (1924), with Lutret (1925), with Lazar Volovick and Nora Auric (1926), Udar group exhibition (Paris, 1923), Contemporary French Art in Moscow (1928), Chisla magazine group (Paris, 1931, 1932), Our Union magazine (Paris, 1936), In Honour of Victory (Paris, 1946), Russian Artists in the Paris School (Saint-Denis, 1960, Paris, 1961), Artists of Montparnasse (London, 1970), Significant Paintings by Russian Artists in French Collections (Paris, 1972), The Russian View (Heidelberg, 1974), exhibitions of Russian art in London (1921) and Paris (1931, 1932, 1936) and one-man shows in Paris (1919, 1923, 1927, 1929, 1931, 1932, 1933, 1936, 1946, 1951, 1955, 1960, 1962, 1969, 1974), London (1954, 1960), Philadelphia (1958), Geneva (1969) and Cannes (1974).
