Painter, graphic artist, theatrical designer. Studied under Alfred Eberling at the VKhUTEMAS in Petrograd (1919–20) and under Mstislav Dobuzhinsky and Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin at the Academy of Arts (1921–26). Met Pavel Filonov (1923) and joined the Masters of Analytical Art (1924). Contributed to all the group’s exhibitions (1926–30). One of the initiators of the split in the Masters of Analytical Art (1932). Worked for the Municipal Committee of Artists, designed museum and exhibition interiors, including the Soviet Pavilion at the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne in Paris (1937). Worked for theatres in Leningrad, Moscow, Kiev and Donetsk (from 1938).
