Nikolai Sazhin

Born: 1948, Troitsk (Chelyabinsk Region)

Painter, graphic artist, teacher. Born in the family of Alexei Sazhin in the town of Troitsk in Chelyabinsk Region (1948). Moved with his family to Vyborg (1959). Graduated from the Vladimir Serov School of Art in Leningrad (1972). Studied graphic art at the Ilya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1972–78). Taught drawing at the Vladimir Serov School of Art in Leningrad (1977–89) and the Ilya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1989–90). Member of the Union of Artists (1986) and the St Petersburg Academy of Modern Art of Immortals (1996). Taught at the Academy of Art and Industry in St Petersburg (from 1996). Lives and works in St Petersburg. Contributed to exhibitions in private apartments (from 1971) and official shows (from 1980), including Abstraction in Russia: XX Century at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg (2001–02), Portraiture in Russia: XX Century at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg (2001–02), Times of Change: Art in the Soviet Union (1960–85) at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg (2006) and a one-man show at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg (2003).
