Tatyana Mavrina

Painter, graphic artist, illustrator. Born in the family of writer and teacher Alexei Lebedev and his wife Anastasia Mavrina in Nizhny Novgorod (1902). Studied under Nikolai Sinezubov, Nikolai Krymov, Guerman Fyodorov and Robert Falk at the VKhUTEMAS/VKhUTEIN in Moscow (1921–29). Member of Growth (1928), Thirteen (1929–31), Society of Easel Artists (1929) and the Moscow branch of the Union of Artists. Collaborated with various publishing houses (from 1932). Created a highly original decorative style of book graphic art based on the traditions of Russian folk art. Honoured Artist of the RSFSR (1981). Winner of the State Prize of the USSR (1975), Hans Christian Andersen International Prize and numerous awards at the Leipzig Book Fair. Died in Moscow (1996). Died in Moscow and buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery (1996). Contributed to exhibitions (from 1928).
