Anatoly Proshkin

Anatoly Proshkin (1907–1986), Russian landscape painter, graphic artist, teacher, writer. Younger brother of artist Victor Proshkin, father of film director Alexander Proshkin. Studied at Kharkiv Technical College of Folk Creativity and under Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, Grigory Bobrovsky, Alexander Savinov and Alexei Karev at the VKhUTEIN in Leningrad. Member of October, Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia and the Union of Artists. Fought in the Second World War. Taught at the Vera Mukhina School of Art and Industry in Leningrad.

Painter, graphic artist, teacher, writer. Younger brother of Victor Proshkin, brother-in-law of Victoria Belakovskaya, uncle of Vladimir Proshkin, father of film director Alexander Proshkin (born 1940). Born in Kharkiv in the family of a merchant called Nikolai Proshkin from Oboyan in Kursk Province (1907). Studied at Kharkiv Technical College of Folk Creativity (1921–23) and under Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, Grigory Bobrovsky, Alexander Savinov and Alexei Karev at the VKhUTEIN in Leningrad (1924–30). Member of October (1929–30), Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (1930–32) and the Union of Artists (from 1934). Travelled with Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin to Novgorod (1936) and accompanied him as far as Rybinsk on his voyage from Leningrad to Perm (1938). Married a translator called Anna (1909–1972), who gave birth to a son called Alexander (1940). Fought on the Leningrad and Volkhov fronts during the Second World War (1941–44). Taught at the Higher School of Art and Industry/Vera Mukhina School of Art and Industry in Leningrad (from 1947). Wrote articles and notes on the teaching of drawing to designers and architects (1969–82) and memoirs ?f Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin (1982). Died in Leningrad (1986). Contributed to exhibitions (from 1931).
