Photographer. Born in the family of a peasant called Mikhail Shagin in Yaroslavl Province (1904). Moved to Moscow (1922). Worked as an amateur photographer (1920s) and took up professional photography under the influence of Roman Karmen. Worked for the Soviet press (from 1928). Employed as a photo reporter for Komsomol Pravda and collaborated with other newspapers (1933–50). Photographed the Moscow-Volga Canal (1937) and worked as a frontline photo correspondent for Komsomol Pravda (1941–45). Collaborated with various publishing houses (from 1950). One of the first Soviet photographers to work in colour. Died in Moscow (1982).
