Konstantin Thon designed the embankment and landing wharf in front of the Imperial Academy of Arts (1832–34). The embankment is decorated with Ancient Egyptian sphinxes, which have the face of Pharaoh Amenhotep III (13th century BC). They were brought to Russia from Thebes (1832) and installed on the embankment (1834).
