Virgin Gorgoepikoos

This rare iconographic type reproduces the original Greek icon of the Virgin Gorgoepikoos (“she who is quick to hear”), which was kept at the Monastery of Docheiariou on Mount Athos in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Mother of God is portrayed at full-length with Jesus in the image of the Saviour Emmanuel cradled in the embrace of her left arm. The Child is depicted with a scroll, which symbolises Christ’s role as a law-maker.
