Winter Canal

Canal from the River Neva to the River Moika. Dug by Vasily Ozerov to drain the plot of land earmarked for the Winter Palace of Peter the Great (1718–19). Granite embankments and three granite bridges were built – Hermitage Bridge, First Winter Bridge and Second Winter Bridge (1782–84). The arch joining the two buildings on the opposite banks of the Winter Canal – Old Hermitage and Hermitage Theatre – was built by architect Georg Friedrich von Veldten (1783).
