Built for Tsarevich Alexis Petrovich, son of Peter the Great from his first marriage to Eudoxia Lopukhina (1714). Built rapidly as it was not made of stone, but wood and clay. Alexis celebrated his marriage to Princess Charlotte of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel in the palace (spring 1715). He was later accused of treason, sentenced to death for plotting against his father, tortured and buried in the Peter and Paul Fortress (1718). After the death of Catherine I (1727), Alexis’ son ascended the throne as Peter II. Housed the Berg (Mining) College (1723). Later awarded to the Palace Chancellery and used as the imperial brewery.
