At the Shores of the Gulf of Finland (Udrias near Narva)

In 1888, Ivan Shishkin made his first trip to the environs of Narva. He was instantly charmed by the Estonian countryside and often returned to these parts.

The artist was not only drawn to the diversity of the local forest nature. He was also entranced by the striking panoramas on the high coastline of the Gulf of Finland.

This motif lies at the heart of this particular painting. Shishkin conveys the epic beauty of the Baltic shoreline, demonstrating his vivid feeling for nature and ability to depict it in a generalised fashion with almost illusory accuracy.

Udrias is first mentioned in 1241 and the coastline is now a special zone of conversation and protection. The area is also known as Udria, Utria and Uttria.
