Painter, teacher. Son of an emancipated serf called Konstantin Zaryanko. Studied under Alexei Venetsianov and Maxim Vorobyov at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1830s), where he was awarded the title of non-class artist (1836) and a major silver medal (1841). Academician (1843), professor (1850). Lived in St Petersburg (mid-1820s–1843, 1846–55) and Moscow (1843–46, 1856–70). Taught at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1856–70).
