Painter, graphic artist. Born in the family of Mikhail Orlov in Leningrad (1952). Studied at the Leningrad College of Seafaring (1968–72) and the Vladimir Serov School of Art in Leningrad (1975–77). Took up abstract composition with Nikolai Sychyov (1976). Helped to paint Russian Orthodox churches in Pskov Region (1980–82). Founding member of the Fellowship of Experimental Fine Art (1983). Vice-president of the Free Cultural Centre (from 1989). Consultant on the Russian avant-garde for the Galleri Terseus in Stockholm (1990–95). Vice-president of the 10 Pushkin Street Cultural Centre in St Petersburg (from 1998), director of the Museum of Nonconformist Art in St Petersburg (from 2001). Author of the Self-Developing Square concept. Founding member of the Fifth Thursday and 7 groups. Contributed to exhibitions (from 1983).
