Painter, graphic artist, teacher. Brother-in-law of Alexander Samokhvalov. Born in the family of Alexander Ionin in the village of Navolok in St Petersburg Province (1890). Studied at the School of Drawing of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts (1908–13), under Dmitry Kardovsky at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1913–17), VKhUTEMAS (1921–22) and under Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin at the Ilya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1934–36). Member of the Community of Artists (1928) and the Union of Artists (1933). Headed a school of art in Bezhetsk (1919–21). Evacuated to Kirghizia (1942–44). Died in Leningrad (1948). Contributed to exhibitions (from 1918).
