The Syama Monastery of the Nativity of the Virgin was founded in 1524 on the south-west shore of Lake Kubena in Vologda Province. It enjoyed the attention and patronage of the rulers of Muscovy. Throughout its history, the cloister often burnt down, and was sacked by Polish troops during the Time of Troubles. There was a miracle-working icon of Our Lady of Syama in the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin.
