French engraver. Son of a hairdresser who was brought up in poverty by his widowed mother. Studied under Antoine Hérisset and Nicolas Henri Tardieu in Paris (from 1721). Engraved the drawings of Jean-Baptiste Le Prince. Opened a studio on Rue de la Harpe in Paris (1733). Academician (1743), councillor of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture (1771), engraver to King Louis XVI (1782). Died after an illness in Paris (1783).
