Georg Christian Wächter

Georg Christian Wächter (1729–1789), German medallist. Younger brother of Johann Georg Wächter. Studied under Jean Dassier in Geneva. Engraved medals in Mannheim and St Petersburg.

German medallist. Younger brother of Johann Georg Wächter. Born in the south German town of Heidelberg (1729). Studied medal engraving under Jean Dassier in Geneva (1750s). Appointed court medallist in Mannheim (1769–70), where he engraved medals in honour of the founding of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (1769), Charles Theodore, Prince-Elector and Count Palatine (1769), Voltaire (1769–70) and Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1770). Lived in Russia (1771–89), where he engraved medals in honour of Count Grigory Orlov (1771), historical rulers and events from the reign of Catherine the Great (1770s–80s). Died in St Petersburg (1789). Contributed to exhibitions, including St Petersburg: A Portrait of the City and its Citizens at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg (2003).
