Johann Georg Wächter

Johann Georg Wächter (1726–1800), German medallist. Elder brother of Georg Christian Wächter. Engraved medals at the St Petersburg Mint and Imperial Academy of Arts.

German medallist. Elder brother of Georg Christian Wächter. Born in the south German town of Heidelberg (1726). Worked as an engraver at the St Petersburg Mint (from 1741) and the Imperial Academy of Arts (from 1762), where he engraved medals depicting historical rulers and events from the reigns of Peter the Great, Catherine I, Empress Elizabeth Petrovna and Catherine the Great. Married a woman who later married Danish sculptor Jacob Semmelhag (1800s). Died in St Petersburg (1800), buried at the Smolensk Cemetery (1800) and reburied at the St Alexander Nevsky Monastery (1936). Contributed to exhibitions, including St Petersburg: A Portrait of the City and its Citizens at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg (2003).
