Wilhelm August Golicke

Born: 1802, Reval (now Tallinn)
Died: 1848, St Petersburg
Painter. Born to a family of Baltic Germans in Reval (1802). Worked as an assistant to George Dawe, helping him to paint the portraits for the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace (1822–28). Studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1829–32), graduating with the title of free artist (1832). Visited England and Italy (1837). Copied portraits of Tsar Nicholas I and his wife by Franz Krüger and Christina Robertson. Died of cholera in St Petersburg (1848). Contributed to exhibitions at the Imperial Academy of Arts (from 1830).
