Alexander Lebedev

Draughtsman, painter, engraver, illustrator. Born in St Petersburg in the family of a colonel called Ignaty Lebedev (1830). Graduated from School of Topography. Studied under Pyotr Basin at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1849–57), graduating with the title of free artist (1857). Drew caricatures for various journals and lithographed albums. Illustrated the works of Alexander Pushkin, Mikhail Lermontov, Ivan Krylov, Alexander Ostrovsky, Nikolai Gogol, Nikolai Nekrasov and Mikhail Saltykov-Schedrin. Died in St Petersburg and buried at the Smolensk Cemetery (1898).
