Nikolai Ievlev

Draughtsman, caricaturist. Pseudonyms: Wilewalde, N. Iev and others. Born in the family of a state councillor called Vasily Ivlev (1835). Ensign. Did not receive a special art education. Drew pencil portraits of other soldiers on the Caucasian front (1855–56). Lived in St Petersburg (from 1857). Visited London (early 1860s), where he met Alexander Herzen. Collaborated with such satirical journals as Gudok (1860s), drawing caricatures on political and art life. Illustrated the works of Nikolai Nekrasov (1865). Died of tuberculosis in St Petersburg (1866).
