Painter. Born in the family of a cobbler called Vasily Kuptsov in Pskov (1899). Studied at the Nikolai van der Vliet School of Art and Industry in Pskov (1913–18), Free Art and Technical Studios in Petrograd (1921) and the VKhUTEMAS/VKhUTEIN in Petrograd/Moscow (1922–26). Attended Pavel Filonov’s studio in Leningrad (from 1925). Member of the Circle of Artists (1927–32). Subjected to a house search in connection with his links to Pavel Filonov (1935). Committed suicide by hanging in Leningrad (1935). Contributed to exhibitions (from 1921).
