Painter, graphic artist, sculptor. Born in the family of Stepan Slepyshev in the village of Lopatino in Penza Region (1932). Studied at the Nizhny Tagil School of Art and Industry (1953–54) and under Alexander Deineka at the Vasily Surikov Institute of Art in Moscow (1958–64). Member of the Union of Artists (1967). Leading member of the unofficial art movement in Moscow (1970s–80s). Awarded a gold medal at the Baghdad International Festival of Arts (1989). Lived and worked in Paris (1990–96), where he joined La Maison des Artistes (1992). Honoured Artist of Russia (2000), corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Arts (2001). Winner of the State Prize of the Russian Federation (2002). Contributed to exhibitions (from 1967), including Times of Change: Art in the Soviet Union (1960–85) at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg (2006) and a one-man show at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow (2002).
