Painter, graphic artist, installation artist, teacher. Born in the family of a military serviceman called Grigory Nazarenko in Moscow (1944). Studied at the Moscow Secondary School of Art (1955–62) and under Alexei Gritsai and Dmitry Zhilinsky at the Vasily Surikov Institute of Art in Moscow (1962–68). Member of the Union of Artists (1969). Worked in Gely Korzhev’s studio at the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1969–72). Winner of the Moscow Komsomol Prize (1972), State Prize of the Russian Federation (1993) and the Moscow Government Prize (1999). Awarded a silver medal of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1987). Corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Arts (1997), full member of the Russian Academy of Arts (2001). Professor of painting at the Vasily Surikov Institute of Art in Moscow (1999). Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation (2002), People’s Artist of the Russian Federation (2014). Contributed to exhibitions (from 1966), including The Post-War Russian Avant-Garde: From the Yury Traisman Collection (USA) at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg (1999), Portraiture in Russia: XX Century at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg (2001–02), Twosome at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg (2002–03), Times of Change: Art in the Soviet Union (1960–85) at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg (2006) and a one-woman show at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg (2006).
