Maria Churakova

Graphic artist, book designer, illustrator. Born in the family of sculptor Sergei Churakov in Moscow (1924). Studied under her father, advised by Pavel Korin, studied under Tatyana Vasnetsova (1939–40), under Pavel Pavlinov and Matvei Dobrov at the Vasily Surikov Institute of Art in Moscow (1945–49) and under Vladimir Favorsky. Designed books for various publishing houses (from 1949). Mostly illustrated works of Russian literature. Created engravings on Russian folklore themes, including the Rus cycle (1970s). Died in Moscow (1982). Contributed to exhibitions (from 1953).
