Originally titled Descendant of Genghis Khan, this film is based on the novel of the same name by the Siberian writer Ivan Novokshonov. In the early 1920s, British troops occupy Mongolia and rob and plunder the native population. A captured Mongolian guerrilla is found to be a direct descendant of the legendary Genghis Khan. The English attempt to manipulate the partisan by crowning him as a puppet prince, but he escapes and returns to his comrades.

Vsyevolod Pudovkin shot the film on location in Mongolia. The authentic setting and the psychological images create an extremely expressive work of cinema.
