May Miturich-Khlebnikov

Painter, graphic artist, illustrator, book designer, teacher, writer on art. Nephew of Futurist poet Velimir Khlebnikov (1885–1922). Born in the family of Pyotr Miturich and Vera Khlebnikova in Moscow (1925). Taught art in his childhood by Pyotr Miturich and Lev Bruni (1930s). Fought in the Second World War (1942–45). Studied at the Moscow Institute of Polygraphy (1947–53). Worked at the Ministry of Agriculture (1953–56). Taught at the Moscow Institute of Polygraphy (1959–64). Illustrated children’s books for various publishing houses (from 1956). Winner of prizes and diplomas for his illustrations to children’s literature, including the Hans Christian Andersen Award (1978). Honoured Artist of the RSFSR (1980). Died in Moscow and buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery (2008). Contributed to exhibitions (from 1957), including Fairytales in Russia at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg (2000), All Creatures Great and Small: Russian Animal Art (18th to 21st Centuries) at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg (2004) and one-man shows in Moscow (2002, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2013).
