Vasily Svarog

Born: 1883, Staraya Russa
Died: 1946, Moscow

Painter, graphic artist. Born in the family of a peasant called Semyon Korochkin and his wife Olga in Staraya Russa (1883). Studied at the Baron Stieglitz Central School of Technical Drawing (1896–1900). Adopted the pseudonym of “Svarog” (Slavic god of celestial fire and blacksmithing). Member of the Society of Travelling Art Exhibitions (1918), Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (1924–28) and the Arkhip Kuinji Society (1928–28), founding member of the Mitrofan Grekov Studio of War Artists (1934). Died in Moscow and buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery (1946). Contributed to exhibitions (from 1902).
