Georgy Vereisky

Graphic artist, painter, teacher. Born in the family of Semyon Vereisky in the town of Proskurov (renamed Khmelnytskyi in 1954) in the Ukraine (1886). Studied at Yegor Schreider’s studio in Kharkiv (1895–1904), Faculty of Law of Kharkiv University (1904–05, 1907–11), Faculty of Law of St Petersburg University (1911–12) and under Mstislav Dobuzhinsky, Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva, Boris Kustodiev and Yevgeny Lanceray at the New Art Studio (1913–16). Taught at the Central School of Technical Drawing (1918) and the VKhUTEMAS/VKhUTEIN (1921–23, professor). Assistant curator (1918–21) and head curator (1921–30) of engraving at the Hermitage. Full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1949). People’s Artist of Russia (1962). Died in Leningrad (1962). Contributed to exhibitions (from 1904), including the World of Art (1915–24).
