Painter, teacher. Born in the family of Mikhail Oreshnikov in Perm (1904). Studied under Ivan Turansky in Perm, at the Perm Free Art Studios/Technical College of Art (1919–24), under Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin at the VKhUTEMAS/VKhUTEIN in Leningrad (1924–27) and as a post-graduate student of Isaac Brodsky at the All-Russian Academy of Arts (1933–36). Member of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia. Taught at the Institute of Proletarian Fine Art (1930–32) and the Ilya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1953–57). Rector of the Ilya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1953–77), professor (1949). Headed a creative studio of painting at the Academy of Arts of the USSR in Leningrad (from 1959). Winner of the Stalin Prize (1948, 1949). Corresponding (1948) and full (1954) member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR, People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1956), People’s Artist of the USSR (1969). Died in Leningrad and buried at the Volkovo Cemetery (1987). Contributed to exhibitions (from 1933).
