Painter, graphic artist, teacher. Born in the family of Andrei Mylnikov in the town of Pokrovsk (renamed Engels in 1931) on the River Volga (1919). Studied architecture (1937–40) and painting (1940–46) at the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Post-graduate student of the Ilya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1948). Taught at the Ilya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (from 1947), where he headed the studio of monumental painting (from 1953). Professor (1957). Winner of the Stalin Prize (1951), State Prize of the USSR (1951, 1977, 1984) and the Ilya Repin State Prize of the RSFSR (1979). Awarded a silver medal by the Ministry of Culture (1958) and a gold medal by the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1981). Full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1966), vice-president of the Russian Academy of Arts (from 1997). People’s Artist of the USSR (1976). Died in St Petersburg and buried at the Volkovo Cemetery (2002).
