Painter, graphic artist, poster designer, teacher. Born in the family of Alexander Serebryany in Horodnia in the northern Ukraine (1907). Studied at the Poltava Studio of Art (1922–23), under Arkady Rylov at the Leningrad Technical College of Art and Industry (1924–27) and under Vasily Belyaev, Arkady Rylov, Mikhail Bobyshov and Vasily Savinsky at the VKhUTEIN/Institute of Proletarian Fine Art (1927–31). Member of the youth wing of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (1925–29). Designed theatrical sets and costumes (1931–37). Taught at the Ilya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1948–79). Professor (1949). Chairman of the Leningrad branch of the Union of Artists (1954–58). People’s Artist of the USSR, corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1947). Died in Leningrad (1979). Contributed to exhibitions (from 1925).
