Maria Temryukovna

Born: circa 1545, Kabardia
Died: 1569, Alexandrovskaya Sloboda

Maria Temryukovna was the second wife of Ivan the Terrible. She was born in the family of Muslim prince Temrjuk of Kabardia circa 1545. After converting to Christianity on 20 July 1561, she changed her name from Ku?enej to Maria.

Maria married Ivan IV in the Dormition Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin on 21 September 1561. Described as “wild-tempered and hard-hearted,” she died in Alexandrovskaya Sloboda on 6 September 1569. Like Ivan’s first wife Anastasia,  it was later rumoured that she had been poisoned.
