Kurt Sanderling

German conductor. Born in the town of Ayrs in East Prussia (now Orzysz in Poland) in a Jewish family (1912). Fled to the Soviet Union to escape the Nazis (1936). Appointed a conductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra (1941), conducting the orchestra a total of 427 times (1941–60). Evacuated with the orchestra to Novosibirsk during the Second World War (1941–45). Accompanied the orchestra on tours of Finland, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, West Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Japan and Poland (1946–58). Returned to East Germany (1960) and headed the Berlin Symphony Orchestra (until 1978). Died in Berlin (2011).
