Fyodor Chaliapin

Opera singer, amateur artist. Born in Kazan in the family of a poor clerk called Ivan Chaliapin (1873). Performed at Savva Mamontov’s Russian Private Opera (1896), Bolshoi Theatre (1899), Mariinsky Theatre (1899) and Sergei Diaghilev’s Saisons Russes (1907–09, 1913). Emigrated (1922). Died of leukemia in Paris and buried at the Cimetière des Batignolles (1938), reburied at the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow (1984).
