Russia Applied Art Religious Holy Water Basin

Holy Water Basin

Russian Orthodox Christians regard water as a symbol of purification and rebirth. It also symbolises the presence of Jesus Christ. Holy water was used to consecrate churches, houses and people, to cure the sick, and during the communion service. Water was blessed in Russian churches by dipping a cross into it. Basins for holy water were often richly decorated with embossed ornamentation and donated to Russian monasteries.
