Kargopole Monastery of the Transfiguration

The Kargopole Monastery of the Transfiguration was founded on the right bank of the River Onega in the late thirteenth century. It was originally named St Bassian’s Hermitage after its founder, St Bassian of Strokino. The monastery was sacked during the Polish-Lithuanian invasion and never quite recovered its former grandeur.
