Holy Sign Hotel

The construction of a railway line between Moscow and St Petersburg and the Nicholas Railway Station led to the creation of a large square outside the railway terminus. The plan was adopted (February 1845). Tsar Nicholas I commanded the “side opposite the station of the St Petersburg-Moscow Railway, in the capital, to be built up with decorous edifices.” Alexander Gemilian built the Holy Sign (Znamenskaya) Hotel (1845–57).
