Theatrical designer, draughtsman, painter, teacher. Born in the family of Pyotr Sotnikov in Leningrad (1938). Studied at the Leningrad Secondary School of Art (1949–53, expelled) and the Leningrad Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinematography (1958–62). Worked at the Nikolai Okhlopkov Theatre of Drama in Irkutsk (1962–65) and the Barnaul Theatre of Young Viewers (1965–66). Principal designer of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatka Television (1966–67). Returned to Leningrad (1967), where he choreographed the mass scenes marking the fiftieth anniversary of the Bolshevik revolution (1967). Costume designer at Lenfilm Studios (1967–68). Member of the Union of Artists (1968). Designed the sets for around 150 theatrical performances. Awarded the State Prize (1982, 1991). Taught at the Leningrad Academy of Theatrical Art (from 1984).
