Alexander Ustinov

Alexander Ustinov (1796–1868), Russian amateur painter, teacher. Served in the Russian army. Director of a grammar school in Vilna, painted in Italy, lived in poverty in St Petersburg.

Amateur painter, teacher. Born in the family of Vasily Ustinov (1796). Graduated from the First Military Academy in St Petersburg and served in the Russian army (1820s). Director of a grammar school in Vilna (1830s). Retired and emigrated to Italy to paint (1840s). Friend of Decembrist Nikolai Bestuzhev (1791–1855) and artists Karl Brullov and Lev Zhemchuzhnikov. Returned to St Petersburg, where he lived in poverty (1860s). Died in St Petersburg (1868). Contributed to exhibitions, including Play and Passion in Russian Fine Art at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg (1999–2000).
