Pyotr Belenok

Painter, graphic artist, sculptor. Born in the family of Ivan Belenok in the village of Korogod in the northern Ukraine (1938). Graduated from the Kiev School of Art. Studied sculpture at the Kiev Institute of Art (1957–63). Moved to Moscow (1957), where he took part in alternative exhibitions and the activities of unofficial art groups. Member of the Union of Artists (1967). Combined elements of Photorealism and Abstract Expressionism, merged in a fantastic cataclysm of fantasy and reality. Created the Exodus cycle of 150 sheets on the theme of universal collapse and destruction. Died in Moscow (1991). Contributed to exhibitions (from late 1960s), including numerous Western exhibitions (1970s–80s) and Times of Change: Art in the Soviet Union (1960–85) at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg (2006).
