Yevgeny Mravinsky

Died: 1988, Leningrad

Conductor. Born in St Petersburg in the family of lawyer and actual state councillor Alexander Mravinsky (1903). Graduated from the Petrograd Conservatoire as a composer and conductor. Worked at the Kirov Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Leningrad (1932–38). Principal conductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra (1938–88). Gave more than 950 concerts, taking the orchestra on numerous tours of Europe, Japan and the United States. Taught at the Leningrad Conservatoire (1936–37, 1961–68). Professor (1963). Died in Leningrad and buried at the Cemetery of St John the Theologian (1988).
